Research

The School Sisters of Notre Dame North American Archives (NAA) holds a broad array of materials relating to the lives and work of SSNDs in North America and it mission extensions in Latin America, Africa, Japan, Guam and Puerto Rico.

The archives are available for use by both in-person and long-distance researchers. Please refer to the sections on sister records, school and parish records, and orphanage records for more information on researching those topics.

Research requests can be submitted through our reference request form. Due to the volume of requests we receive, it may take up to 4-6 weeks to receive a response to your research request.

On-site Research

The archives are open for on-site research by appointment only. Please indicate in your initial request if you wish to do on-site research. Archives staff may also suggest an in-person appointment for more complex requests.

Distance Research

Research services are also available for those who cannot visit the archives in person. Archives staff reserve the right to limit long-distance assistance for frequent or more complex requests.

Both on-site and long-distance researchers should use the reference request form to submit their request.

Access Restrictions

The NAA makes every effort to provide access to its collections. Certain categories of records, however, may be restricted from general use or subject to limited use. Some records may be restricted due to privacy concerns or because the items are fragile in nature. Records of leadership and community decisions are subject to restrictions. The School Sisters of Notre Dame reserve the right to restrict or limit access to any item within the archival collection.
