Accounts from the Archives: SSND in Liberia

The School Sisters of Notre Dame (SSND) ministered in Liberia for two decades, beginning in October 1970. There they devoted their whole hearts to learning the culture and needs of their neighbors. The sisters undertook curriculum planning, teacher training, and teaching, eventually opening a secondary school. In August 1990, the sisters who were ministering in Liberia at the time were forced to leave the country due to a brutal civil war. The decision to leave was a difficult one, coming months after the first offer by the United States to evacuate all American personnel. The sisters wished to remain with the Liberian people, but eventually the situation became too dangerous with soldiers killing indiscriminately, food supplies dwindling, and all utilities deactivated.

SSND no longer minister in Liberia, but they do have a very active presence in Africa. Sisters from the SSND Province of Africa are in five countries: The Gambia, Sierra Leone, Ghana, Nigeria and Kenya.
