SSND Association Covenant Celebration in Wisconsin

Click to view images A Holiday Open House was held on January 5 and 6 at the St. Louis campus. The SSND Choir, under the direction of Sister Gail Buckman. The Notre Dame Concert Choir performed two songs. The choir looked with joy at Sister Gail Buckman! The historic crib in the chapel. Sister Frances Ann Eveler shares her collection of nativity sets. SSND Nativity Scenes
Click to view images This crèche at Sancta Maria in Ripa in St. Louis is one of only three in the U.S. designed by sculptor Sebastian Osterrieder. The crib was purchased in the 1920s from Sebastian Osterreider, who specialized in making cribs in the eastern style. Villa Assumpta Chapel in Baltimore - decorated with trees, poinsettias and candles. This stained glass scene featuring the Holy Family is from Notre Dame Girls’ High School in Kyoto, Japan. Traditional Nativity on display at St. Mary of the Pines in Chatawa, Miss. This large crèche is prominently displayed in the chapel at Villa Notre Dame in Wilton, Conn. This crib set is from Notre Dame of Elm Grove, Wisconsin. The figures in this Nativity in the Province of Africa are made of banana leaves, wire and woven reeds. This display from Guam is representative of the traditional Belen (a miniature scene of Bethlehem). This needlepoint was begun by Sister Anthelma Polinska and finished by Sister Bernita Hessling in Chicago. This Nativity is a Christmas season highlight at Notre Dame Convent in Waterdown, Ontario, Canada. Click to view images This nativity scene was crafted of Mississippi River stones and driftwood. These deer are hand cut from paper and the ornaments make a home among the gifts of all creation. A delicate web created with gossamer-like threads glistens as the star crown for this tree. The evergreen branches gently hold brilliantly quilted bouquets of daisies and tulips. Garlands of foxes, squirrels and deer embrace the tree branches. Origami fish are found side-by-side amid sprigs of green, nuts and frosted pine cones.

Click to view images Notre Dame Academy alumnae donated this statue of Our Lady of Grace in 1952 to Notre Dame Convent, Waterdown, Ontario, Canada. Our Lady of Grace began welcoming pioneer sisters, candidates and boarders to the Canadian Motherhouse in 1927. Patroness of the former Dallas Province, Our Lady of Prompt Succor in St. Mary of the Pines, Chatawa, Miss. This statue of Our Lady of Good Counsel welcomes all who venture up Good Counsel Hill’s 217 steps in Mankato, Minn. This figure, entitled Take This Child and Make Him Grow, in Elm Grove, Wis., symbolizes the SSND educational mission. This statue, Our Lady of Fatima, was relocated to St. Louis when LeClerc College, in Belleville, Ill., closed in 1949. Our Lady of Grace, now at Kyoto Notre Dame University, was created in 1949 from a photo supplied by the sisters in Japan. This statue at Villa Assumpta in Baltimore was created to be a material expression of the theme of the Assumption. Mary, Mother, Model and Companion in the Novitiate Garden in Ghana, Africa, reminds us that we walk with Mary in our struggles. The new council received the African symbol of unity to remind them to lead the sisters to stay united in a divided world. The border has an Adinkra symbol from the Ashanti region of Ghana. This is known as the Gye Nyame, meaning “except for God." SSNDs of the new province present for the celebration wearing specially printed cloth, a tradition for special occasions Sisters Angela Amaka Ezugwu, Paulina Raymond, Patricia Rass and Eunice Uwer Dagi hosted a celebration in Milwaukee. SSNDs in Milwaukee recite a Psalm for Africa during their celebration. SSNDs in Milwaukee celebrated the formation of the new province with a prayer service and cake.
